GCN Master is fully compatible with Microsoft's Video for Windows (VfW) standard. This guarantees the user
compatibility and flexibility when choosing editing, effect, and graphics software. However, VfW was not engineered
with professional video in mind. In fact, VfW suffers from two major problems. First, VfW was developed to digitize
video at 30 frames/second. However, true NTSC video signals consist of 29.97 frames/second. This .03 frames/second
difference throws off lip synch during playback of the digitized clip. This gets more noticeable as the clip plays longer.
The other major problem with VfW is its video buffering technique. VfW smoothly buffers video signal data during
recording on the PC's RAM, but during playback, VfW doesn't use this buffer. The result is jittering video in playback.
The video jitters because every system operation (background programs, mouse movements, hard disk calibration
processes, etc.) directly affects the data stream and interrupts video playback.
Realizing VfW's limitations, FAST produced a video optimizing program called MediaCache. FAST MediaCache was
designed to diminish video jitters by buffering video data on the PC's RAM during playback (in read-ahead cache).
MediaCache also converts digitized video back to 29.97 frames/second. This lets GCN Master maintain a constant data
stream, even at high data rates. FAST MediaCache is included with all FAST products.
